Sorry for not updating this blgo for sometime, I am very new to DSLR world, try and keep on trying is key to bring up the competency and technique on photo shooting. Portrait something I dun have any experience at all, not even on the P&S camera.

This photo shooting session in not planned, but just happened to meet my friend and her family at Giant Supermarket. Her cute and active kid triggered me to have a shot on him.

With nothing in my mind, I just get the camera and shoot. This totally doesn’t help, as I am using the setup while I am doing the food shooting. It is not applicable at all.

After several attempts, I realize to snap an active and moving kid, shutter speed is very important to capture the moment, but with faster shutter speed, you need to get higher ISO in order to get a great brighter image, but the depth of image is under consideration also. So we need to get a balance between all. We did realize our kit lens limitation, but still we try our best out of it. Forget to add in the kid’s mood into consideration too.

As the photo shooting is done inside a supermarket where a lot of unexpected thing out of your control, such as people flow, background and lighting, of course SECURITY GUARD too. Before we are able to have more shot, we get “INVITED” out from the supermarket as NO PHOTO SHOOTING is ALLOWED in the supermarket. lolx

Key Learning for a success shooting:
1. Faster Shutter Speed
2. Lower Depth of Image
3. Higher ISO
4. Interaction between you and the kid
( Try to make the kid familiar with you and your camera, let them see what you shot, they will get excited easily and will get more interaction with you)

This shooting session did help to improve us on the future kid portrait shooting, and here is the shot we had.

We are attending the Malaysia Webmasters forum on that day and we brought along our baby D60 with us. We happen to have some time during breaks between the sharing, we discover the night view of Bayan Baru from the Suntech Tower.

We didn’t bring any tripod with us which is key for a good night view shot. Here is some shot we would like to share. It is not a good one. But it is our first night view shot.

Learning and practicing is a key to get a better photo. This will be the record of our photo shooting skill development and improvement. Hope to see some improvement then.

After few attempts and trial out at the new D60 camera, we are getting more and more familiar with the setup on the camera. Of course, the quality of photo is increasing.

Each time we have food pornography shot, we will do some experimental to learn and to brush up our photo shooting skill. We had trial the aperture, shutter speed, and composition.

We will try on the food presentation, it show how the setup on the food make such a different on your photo quality. Of course the photo tell thousand words and thousand lies too. This consider our first outdoor food pornography projects. Yes, outdoor, open air under the palm tree. I believe you all might reach here from the Warung Kelapa Sawit review at PenangTuaPui.com blog.

Most of the photo shooting we had so far in under the roof or shaded location. The shooting projects is quite challenging as first time outdoor shot on food. We play around with the shutter speed, ISO and aperture to get the best shot we want.

In order to get great shot on the cook is difficult as we need to get faster shutter yet brighter photo. It is tough, so we got some photo ended up in the recycle bin,

After 2 shooting project on the food pornography at restaurant, we tried our project on the famous roti bakar at Bayan Lepas, Joo Leong Cafe.

During this shooting session, we realized that good lighting is very important for good shooting, not the camera nor the shooting skills. We are happy to get a great day with great lighting as we sit quite near to the front door with brighter environment.

After several trial on the manual mode, we tried to play with something else, not the camera setup, shooting angle, nor the shutter speed or aperture. We tried the composition.

What is composition and how to get a good composition in the photo? I believe no one able to teach how to get a good composition in the photo, senses is the key to get the good composition. We did ask a lot of GURU in the area and the only advice we had is keep on shooting, shooting and shooting. Practice make perfect. Only keep on practicing will help to train up our sense to get great shot.

Yes…I know, I had been thinking for nights if I want to include this Ichiban Ramen photo as part of the collection we had so far. I had made up my mind and here is the photo I shoot using a normal P&S camera.

After the first shooting project, we start to know the basic stuff we learn. But we don’t have much time to practice before the 2nd project hit us. This type of practical lesson will help us to improve our skill. Here we are, our second photo shooting project: Restaurant Dragon-Y. Upon arriving to the destination, photo shooting started. I feel the photo is kind of dark under auto mode and I start to play around with the shutter speed and aperture. Some how I still got over-expose photo, too bright or too dark.

But after few tens of shots, we started to learn and improve in term of handling the DSLR in manual mode. It takes us sometime to get familiar with our new baby. ~phew… We are lucky enough to get the skill ready before the food is ready.

Lets share what we had during the first project - Dragon-y.

After several attempt, we failed to get the results we want. So we move to use the auto mode. We can’t get wrong with that. We try some shooting at the office area as our 15 min hands on. The photo quality from the auto mode is not convincing, we are expecting more from her. Seems like we need more time to play around with her. But we had no time to wait.

Ya.. without hesitate to try out our new baby girl D60, we brought her together for the first photo shooting project to try out her performance at Domino Pizza. We face a lot of difficulty while playing with the new toys as we had get used to the P&S (point and shoot) camera.

We did try macro mode from Nikon D60, but it doesn’t want to bare a good and bright image and the auto flash always triggered and flipped everytime you try to focus. It is due to the darker environment indoor. It might be influence from my SIFU, TY, I don’t like to use flash at all in any of my food shooting. As it looks deadly with flash. (my 2 cents)..

So with no other choice, we hands on to the manual mode to play around with the shutter speed and aperture. We are lucky enough to get the jackpot and here are the outcome.

This question had been bugging us for months before we decided the model we had now. A lot of factors are put into the consideration list and ended up we can’t even make any decision. Among the factors are budget, performance, best on food shooting, noise level, and lens.

We tried to get input from others, but it does not help at all. Nikon lover support Nikon, Canon lover supports his own preference. It is hard for us to decide.

But finally we decide to give Nikon D60 a try as all our GURU who teach us on photo shooting is using Nikon. We can always seek for help on the new baby we had.
